I am not great at events. They make me anxious. Mabel’s First Holy Communion was no different, though given the gift of foresight I would have approached it with serenity. It was a beautiful day, perfect really. Mabel was so excited for this day. She wore Beatrix’s dress, a crown like the one that Larkspur wore rather than a veil, and kept one of Sarah’s rosaries close. Silas and Job both served at the Mass and that was extra special. The only imperfection was the roses falling from Mabel’s crown because I, not knowing better, used insufficient hot glue when I made it. You can see a rose falling off in this last photo! I’d never made a crown of this sort before, but using Larkspur’s that was made by a professional as an example, and with Beatrix giving moral support, I managed to do a pretty good job.
It’s hard to believe that we only have Ambrose’s First Holy Communion left, and then it will be time to shift to grandchildren! First Holy Communions are so special and my kids love reminding me that I didn’t receive mine until I was an adult, twenty years ago this spring. I entertained the thought of having a party to celebrate the anniversary this year, but it wasn’t meant to be. Who am I kidding anyway? Parties are events.
Congratulations to Mabel on this special day. The crown is beautiful, Ginny, and I truly would not have noticed the rose if you hadn’t mentioned it 🙂
How is Mabel 7??? She was just born last week! Congratulations on her first Communion. She’s lovely in her flower crown. I know what you mean about the stress of events; it gets to be a lot with lots of kids. There’s always another birthday or sacrament to celebrate, but it’s all good.
God bless sweet Mabel!
I have been a silent reader for years, but felt moved to comment today. It is always so encouraging and refreshing to see your family participating in church life. These little ones are the future of the church.
Our family of 7 struggle along in our local parish being converts in 2019 and I look forward to two more first holy communions. Your blog played a part in that story and I have always wanted to say thank you for your blog.

I totally relate to feeling inadequate and uncomfortable at events such as these. But as an outsider, looking at these photos, the day was splendid, memorable, and as perfect as humanly possible.
Blessings to sweet Mable!
