Christmas Folk Song

From my reading on the afternoon of Christmas Eve:

“We always come back to the beginning.

In the beginning the love song of God is a folk song.  Folk song is the telling of the whole world’s story through the singing of one man’s heart.

The Word of God uttered in Christ’s human life is a folk song.

In it is all the primal love and joy and sorrow of all the world.

It explains and simplifies all human lives in all times.

We hear it as children playing by the seashore hear the music of the ocean in a little shell.

We hear it in the voices we know best:  our own children’s voices, the voices of our parents, wives, husbands, and friends.

We hear it in laughter and tears, tuned in to the dullness of our hearing, tuned to the beating of our hearts.

We hear it as sweet and clear as bird’s song in Nazareth.

The song of the Incarnation is a folk song.

It is the song of the mother rocking the cradle.

It is the song of the children singing their nursery rhymes.

It is the song of the shepherd calling his sheep.

It is the song of the lover standing at the door.

It is the song of the bridegroom singing to his bride.”

-Caryll Houselander in The Reed of God

I wish you all a Christmas season filled with peace, joy, and HOPE!

Is that honey candy you are pulling? I grew up making honey candy and we make it on Halloween, but i have never met anybody else that makes it. 1 cup honey, 1 cup sugar, and a pinch of baking soda?

It’s molasses taffy. I think I’d like to try it with honey, though!

    Merry Christmas Ginny and family!
A beautiful post as usual. Thank you for this excerpt from your reading on Christmas Eve.
And I love seeing all the beautiful knits the children are wearing, and the lovely church photos, and your wonderful tree, and your growing children, and oh my but I’ve never seen pine cones that big! Looking forward to the New Year and enjoying more of your family from my northern existence (but I kind of feel like I live next door to you).

Thank you!! Aren’t those pinecones amazing? I had Jonny pull over on the side of the road so that I (and the kids) could gather them up from a stand of longleaf pines in North Carolina last summer.

My friend Lori made it in memory of our friend Sarah. http://theclayrosarygirl.blogspot.com/2014/04/anchor-bead.html. She used Sculpey clay and stamps to make the impressions and then painted it.

Letters From Father Christmas was just read over by my oldest son last night once again with chuckles! I love that picture of your son reading it. Also, at your recommendation, I got Ticket to Ride for my youngest son and he LOVES it. So does everyone else. Thank you and Merry Christmas!

It looks like you had a lovely holiday! I can’t believe how big your kids are getting! I can remember when I first started reading your blog, Silas had either just been born or you were still pregnant with him…and now he’s huge and you have Job, who’s also getting huge!

You captured the “folk song” so well:

We hear it in the voices we know best: our own children’s voices, the voices of our parents, wives, husbands, and friends.

The voices come through loud and clear in your photos. Merry Christmas to you and yours!
