The kids have been making all sorts of things in the front yard with hammers and nails and paint.
My strawberries are just about finished producing. I only made one batch of Strawberry Lemon Preserves and it is going to be hard to make it last long. This is my favorite jam ever (recipe from this book).
As I rushed around trying to get out the door with my youngest four for the girls’ soccer game on Saturday morning, Beatrix shouted, “Beenado!!!” I ran outside and watched the bees from the same swarm we caught in April heading up into the trees. They landed far above me and all I could do was set up a bait hive. Ultimately we were late for soccer and the bees got away this time. Beatrix still gets ten bucks for spotting the swarm.
Jonny got a new toy over the weekend. He will be the only one allowed to drive it (sorry, Silas). The younger kids won’t be allowed to go for rides either (sorry, Silas). I’m a little nervous, but we’re mostly excited about our first tractor.
We replaced my broken tiller over the weekend as well, thanks to Craigslist, and the big boys have been helping me get the garden in shape. I’ve been watching this movie and while we haven’t tilled in years, using the heavy mulch system, ultimately things got away from me over the last year and we need some mechanical assistance.
Job is sitting up! He’s changing so much all of a sudden, no longer content to stay in one place.
And…my shawl is getting close to being finished! I must say, absolutely no regrets on that color. I’ve promised myself a trip to Big Meadow as soon as it’s finished. It’s time to go see the baby deer.

We were just at Big Meadow on Memorial Day, we saw lots of deer, but no fawns. However, when we were having our picnic dinner at the Elk Wallow picnic grounds we had a mama bear and her twin cubs walk up on us, needless to say, we got out of there fast!

Lot of fort building on our farm when children were little. Now the grandkids play pioneer. Fun times.

great tractor and raised garden beds! My spouse just finished planting ours but we don’t have raised beds. Good luck this summer with the garden. Some years are just off. Last year after nearly thirty years of canning…….I froze nearly everything! Much easier but not something I want to get in the habit of because I worry about loosing if the electricity goes out for any length of time.

That’s a great tractor! Driving a tractor is how most of my babies learned to drive, up and down the fields all day long. My Mike started out cutting grass on a tractor when he was only 7.
