Green Gables Knits

The sweater that I get asked about most often is, hands down, Joanna Johnson’s Phoebe’s Sweater.  It’s the red hooded sweater that you often see being worn by my girls.  I have knit it not once, but three times.  Beatrix having outgrown the first one I knit for her, is now wearing Larkspur’s original red one.  I knit a new one for Larkspur last fall, as she couldn’t bear to be without one of her own.  Joanna has designed so many wonderful knitting patterns, and she is joining me here today to share a little about her latest collection, Green Gables Knits, and to offer a copy to one of you.

Joanna and Eric Johnson, the creative team behind knitting storybooks Phoebe’s Sweater, Freddie’s Blanket, and Phoebe’s Birthday, have created a fourth knitting book this year. Although it isn’t an illustrated storybook, it still fits well within the crossover genre of knitting and children’s literature. Green Gables Knits is a knitting pattern collection inspired by the beloved story, Anne of Green Gables. It contains eight knitting patterns for garments and accessories:  men, women, teens, along with a home dec item or two. The Johnsons collaborated with The Heirs of L.M. Montgomery, Inc. on this project, which allowed them to print 10 archival photographs from Lucy Maud Montgomery’s personal photo collection to go along with the quote and the knitting patterns inspired by the story.

  2. I love, love, love the idea of a knit book based on the stories of “Anne with an E”! Not only is Anne of Green Gables one of my favourite things ever, but I am over the moon excited that I can knit Anne of Green Gables too! Those knits are gorgeous!!!

When my kids were young (especially my daughter, Rosemary..you can see her blog at rosemary’s fancy) we lived in Michigan and every Sunday evening we watched “The road to Avonlea.” It was a family staple. And before that..the Anne of Green Gables movies. I own all of those on video or dvd. Very happy memories! How lovely to see them recreated in the knits! “oh Sigh!” just an older mom missing her babies…..BUT absolutely loving the grand babies and looking forward to sharing the above with the grandkids!

  5. I had the fun of playing Anne in our school play in grade nine, and I love to visit my sister whom now lives on amazing Prince Edward Island with her family. Anne of Green Gables is such special story to so many people. For good reason!

  8. Being born in Prince Edward Island, the home of Anne of Green Gables, I have always felt a strong connection with the story! I would so love to knit a few of these pieces!!

  12. you wont believe it – but i was just gifted a copy of Anne of Greene Gables book by my mother in law all the way from australia, wouldnt this be a super duper addition to the read !? i love that bag ! I love that cardigan ! I love her dress !!

  21. It looks like such a gorgeous book! I think Anne’s Sweater will be my first project, though I do love the idea of using the carpet bag for knitting projects.
