I started reading Nurse Matilda to my kids this week. I didn’t read this book as a child, and only happened upon it at the library, picking it up because the illustrations on the cover appealed to me. My kids were immediately won over by the fact that the storyline seems to revolve around a family who has a very large number of very naughty children. They all died with laughter throughout the first chapter alone. The problem I am having is that Seth and Keats are both sneaking away with the book during the day and reading ahead. Then Seth wants to share snippets of the story with everyone else, but we don’t want him to spoil it for us! I don’t want either boy reading ahead because I want us all to hear the story at the same time! I should hide it….
I’m still knitting on my Small Things Romper this week, working on the legs first and then I’ll go back up and knit the arms. I really like this pattern and think it will be wonderfully practical this winter.

I don’t know how you get any knitting in at all with such abusy household! The romper is lovely 🙂 and will see lots of wear I bet. I’ve never heard of the book but sneaking ahead is a sure sign of a winner!
Hello, Nurse Matilda sounds great. We are reading The Wishing Chair by Enid Blyton right now, but I will be looking this book up after that 🙂

Haha you should totally hide it! When Harry Potter came out, I was 14 and my dad made us read it aloud as a family. After two pages we were totally sucked in, and my brother and I would fight over who got to read next because it meant we could read ahead while reading aloud and see what was coming! Cheaters 🙂

I love Nurse Matilda and the Nanny McPhee movies that are based on the books. Have you read Mary Poppins? So different from the Disney movie. If you liked Nurse Matilda, you’ll like the Mary Poppins too.

Ooh, that sounds like a good book. We’ll have to check it out. My oldest child does the same – sneaking the book to read and then sharing with others. I have to put the read aloud book away where she can’t get it. Now she justs rereads the book once we are finished. The romper is beautiful!
The romper looks great! So glad you are enjoying a good read with your children. There were some books my husband and I read to our children so often that we could recite them all the way through. After a while the kids could too. I never read Nurse Matilda. Oh well, maybe with future grandchildren.

The Small Things Romper is such a lovely pattern! I think sometimes you have to hide books (I also have a child who loves reading and will complain for me to read Just.One.More.Chapter!)

Did you know that Nanny McPhee and it’s sequel, both starting Emma Thompson, is the movie version of the Nanny Matilda books? Great little films for a rainy day!
It’s pretty impressive that you’ve found a book which appeals to the boys as much as the girls. Can they read ahead but be sworn to secrecy re: not revealing the spoilers? Compromises are always good.
Your knitting is lovely. I like seeing the wooden needles.
How wonderful that your boys are sneaking away with the family read aloud. I have not read that book either and will now have to find a copy here; a laugh out loud book is always welcome.
I love when the book is so good that the kids want to keep reading! That baby is going to have some real nice knits when it arrives!
I love it when they do that, though. It means I at least found something they like which is getting harder and harder with my two.
Nurse Matilda is a fun read-aloud …. and I understand your dilemma — discouraging the boys from reading ahead but wanting to encourage reading! Homeschooling is NOT for wimps …
