Yarn Along

~ Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading, and the evidence of this often shows up in my photographs.  I love seeing what other people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or crocheting right now? What are you reading? Take a photo and share it either on your blog or on Flickr. Leave a link below to share your photo with the rest of us! ~

I read The Orchardist over the last week after seeing it on one of Karen’s Yarn Along posts.  I thought it a unique, moving book and I was pretty engrossed by it.  This is not a light, happy read, but a sensitive one.  I found myself a bit haunted by the story and the characters after finishing it.  I would recommend it, if you like to read an epic tragedy every now and then.  If you are especially sensitive, I wouldn’t read it because there is some difficult subject matter (Karen warned me, but I felt up to it.) I have taken up with Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility since finishing The Orchardist, ready for something light.

I still have several baby knits on the needles, but am taking  a little detour to knit a Botanical Cowl.  The pattern is very simple and easy to execute with interruption, which is perfect for me.  I am already more than halfway through it, and hope to finish it up this week.  I’m knitting it in Madelinetosh Pashmina, in probably my favorite colorway:  filigree.

I almost forgot to mention: In case you missed yesterday’s post: I updated my Sunday Sweater pattern to include sizes 8 and 10. I also updated my Simple Newborn Hat with a Touch of Lace (what was I thinking with that crazy long name? I am so tired of typing it!) and you can now download a pdf of the pattern from the original post.

Oh my gosh- I was just about to send you a comment recommending The Orchardist as your next read (it reminded me of “So Big” so I thought of you)- then I thought, ‘Well, she’s such a big reader (despite so many kids!), maybe she’s already read it…”. Sure enough after using your search bar, turns out you have! Anyways, I loved this book (& your blog!) so much I really had to post this comment. The Orchardist was tough at the end, wasn’t it? I have trouble with any book that doesn’t have a suuuper happy ending and so I did have a bit of a time processing this one. It felt so beautifully (& sadly) real to me. But because I loved this book SO much, I am oddly comforted by the fact that you’ve read it too! -Just had to comment on this as I think I’ve added this book to my top 3 reads! ps. your blog is such a joy- thank you 😉

It is so funny, I saw Karen’s Yarn Along post as well and thought “The Orchardist” sounded fascinating and downloaded it to my Kindle. That’s what I love about the Yarn Alongs – you get knitting and reading ideas! Beautiful colours in the cowl, can’t wait to see it finished.

Really lovely cowl and the colour is just gorgeous ! Enjoy Sense and Sensibilities, Jane Austen is always great to turn to for easy light reading, its what makes her timeless I guess.

Your cowl color is seriously amazing. Someday, when I knit something for myself, I hope to splurge on a Tosh yarn to make it worth the effort of knitting something bigger than size 4! haha!

I love your newborn hat and it has become my go-to for my friends’ girl babes. It knits up so fast and is so elegant yet simple!

I truly love the cowl, especially the yarn you chose! Thanks for the warning about the book, I do like a good saga every now and again…but, I also like knowing before I begin that it is a bit tragic.

And-if you don’t mind, will you download that little hat pdf and read through it? It’s just two pages, but I would love to get a second opinion on the (small) changes I made.

gosh you are a quick reader! Glad you liked it, I like how at the end the whole story lingered in my mind. I was quietly moved by the simple ending. I’m hoping she writes another book! I haven’t knit with the filigree colorway yet 🙂

There were some late nights reading this week! I sat and cried when I finished it, which was a bit awkward because I was at the boys’ piano lessons!!

Thank you for the larger sizes on the Sunday Sweater, too…Gemma is growing, and I want her to always have one that fits her!
