I want you to hear the bees. This was filmed (if you can call it that–I stood there with my camera that isn’t really the best for making movies) in a field beyond the woods in our backyard. No sound from civilization typically reaches this area. That rushing sound, that is the sound of hundreds of honeybees along with some native bees as well, all happily working the Japanese knotweed that is blooming now. It feels pretty wild to stand in the middle of it all.

on the way back from the pesky field

what's this? we'll look it up.

p.s. One of our black swallowtail butterflies emerged from its chrysalis.

We had swallowtails emerging this week, too (see my blog, which I linked to). Ours were both females, I think, but yours looks like a male — more yellow than blue at the bottom of its wings. Beautiful!

I LOVE the sound of the bees-and, pray for me. I’m having major second thoughts about our trip to Virginia-I’m not sure I can leave Benjamin and Samuel!!!!!

Love the buzzing of the bees — it’s one of those “all’s right with the world” sort of sounds!

Thank you for sharing the video. I could imagine myself standing peacefully (and fearfully) beside you while the bees worked their magic all around. Amazing!

Gorgeous photos. We are surrounded by towering Mountain Ash trees and when they are in bloom you can hear the hum of bees, even though most of the trees are over 200ft high! Nature is amazing. Jacinta

How I long to hear that sound again! One day, I will, when I have a home in the country. But for now, I must be content with only a solitary buzz–it seems there aren’t ever very many honey bees around all at once. One plump bee poking around a flower bed at a time seems to be the normal (sadly) in my not-quite-urban-but-definitely-not-suburban neighborhood.
