Yarn Along

~ Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading, and the evidence of this often shows up in my photographs.  I love seeing what other people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or crocheting right now? What are you reading? Take a photo and share it either on your blog or on Flickr. Leave a link below to share your photo with the rest of us! ~

Yarn Along

For literal years I have been wanting to knit a particular cardigan inspired by an out of print vintage pattern that I can’t seem to get my hands on.  It occurred to me that I ought to try writing my own pattern, so that’s just what I am doing.  I cast on Friday night and am almost finished knitting the body of what will be Beatrix’s fall cardigan.  Blue is her color, and I am having a great time knitting this in some of Cynthia’s indigo dyed merino.  It’s the perfect shade of blue.  I am having so much fun knitting this sweater that I may finish it in the next week!  I’ll be excited and kind of nervous to show you.  (Make sure to check back this weekend for a giveaway from Brambleberry Yarns.  Cynthia dyed a skein of yarn especially for one of you to win!)

I haven’t read a chapter book aloud to my boys in awhile, and decided to pick back up with the Little Britches series because they are some of our favorites and we’ve not read beyond the first two.  We are reading The Home Ranch.  I also plan to start reading aloud Hilda Van Stockum’s Five For Victory, the first in her series about the Mitchell family.  It sounds like a sweet story that the whole family will enjoy.

I am so glad to hear you mention LittleBritches. I didn’t discover the series until my youngest daughter and I read them together. We loved them.. They have really stayed with me. The boy/man is so clever and inspiring and lead such an exciting and inspiring life. The struggles, hard work and family values are vividly portrayed. I hope many of your readers also discover this series for themselves. They are not just for boys! (I homeschooled four daughters.)

Oh wow, making up your own cardigan pattern? That sounds like an adventure. I hope it’s a wonderful one.

And hooray for being a reading-out-loud family, too. 🙂

Hi there! I was wondering at what age did you start reading books to your kids, like a whole book with a story divided in chapters… and what books did you use at the beginning? Many thanks!
    Cheers,

    Ginny,
    What a sweet picture. 🙂
I attempted to knit with Bracken by my side last night and it didn’t work out. 🙂

I LOVE the color of that blue yarn. We planted a dye garden this year and planted some indigo, which is thriving. I’m really looking forward to dyeing with it.

    Love, Taryn

Have actually been organised enough to join in this week, I’ve missed linking up. Looking forward to seeing the end result of Beatrix’s fall cardigan, I bet there’ll be a lot of oohing and aahing at the finished result.

I can identify with your picture – isn’t that how we get the most knitting done sometimes! =) I was so excited when my little one crawled on my lap and asked for a sweater out of the yarn I was knitting with… made me so happy! So sweet!

Good luck with the pattern. I find when I am writing a pattern that I will write it and rewrite it a few times before I am completely happy with it and then end up making a few of what I was creating because of all the changes. Love the yarn and can’t wait to see the yarn for the giveaway!

Writing your own pattern and a sweater pattern at that? I’m impressed, Ginny!

We have a few in that series but somehow never read them. I really must pull it off the shelf and take a look. My boys probably would like it, and I haven’t read aloud to them in a very long time (other than our history or science oriented books, but certainly not a good story book).

Have fun designing your own pattern. I love to make my own. There is always something I want to change… yarn weight, garment size, needle size….. I linked-up a post about a fair isle hat I designed to match a pair of mittens I knitted. Be careful, you may get addicted to creating your own patterns:)
