mystery squash from last time…any idea what it is now?

Saturday Garden Journal

My garden is a messy muggy jungle.  I can’t bring myself to clear the beds that need it, nor to do much of anything out there.

It’s just too hot and we were preoccupied with bees last week.  There is lots of growth, but we aren’t harvesting much right now other than potatoes, zucchini, and a few odd tomatoes (they really didn’t recover from the groundhog, but I did put in plants that will give us hopefully a late crop.)

I am looking forward to melons, winter squash, and beans….

How’s your garden growing?

We have tried melons the last few years, and they never amounted to much. Your garden looks great!

Lovely garden! Mine gets a little out of control this time of year, too. I’m already thinking about fall crops — do you do much in the way of a fall garden? I’m hoping to plant spinach, chard, kale, and some root veggies.

Your garden looks lovely Ginny, I love the messy jungle type of garden that seems to have interesting things growing wherever you look! I am a bit envious of your hot weather , it is very cold and muddy here at the moment and I’d love to see some more sun! Have a great week, Julie 🙂

The melon looks so good! We had a few puny but tasty melons. Thanks for this link up. Fun.

I think it also could be a Delicata Squash, but maybe a Delicata is one that is more yellow and orange compared with the Sweet Dumpling being pale.
Two years ago we had some random ones just like that grow where a chicken coop/run had been the year before. They looked much like this and I was super excited as I love Delicata Squash, but the skin was so tough I couldn’t cut it open.
A true Delicata and probably a Sweet Dumpling has a very thin skin, which you can eat if you wish. You can roast them whole, or cut them in half and roast them cut side down with a little butter and salt and pepper on the cut surface. Delicious.

Wonder if the mystery pumpkin was an accidental addition to another seed packet you did plant? It is really neat. I was thinking the same thing about it looking pixalated.

I cannot wait until I know what I am doing. I love my garden but I can’t help feeling a little nervous inviting everyone in knowing that everything is late and crowded compared to everyone elses!

Life is full! After several weeks my kiddos and I made it out to the garden yesterday to do a thorough weeding which I’m glad we did…one more week and I don’t think we’d been able to stay ahead this year. So far we’re enjoying domination over the weeds which is a first for us — and all without herbicides!

Currently harvesting peas, lettuces, garlic, and a few strawberries that have straggled along. Zucchini is coming…

Love your photos! Thanks so much for hosting,

    Lisa

I am so envious of your squash — what a joy to have a supply of squash for the winter.

I gave up on the garden this year. Luckily nothing edible is out there since the strawberries are long eaten.

I think that’s it! I just can’t figure out how it got there. I’ve never bought that variety of seed before, nor did I plant it. Sounds like a good one though based on the reviews!

My garden this week needed lots of attention ! I either get out there early before the heat or the weeds get their way ! So understand !
    Love lima beans.

Your garden is awesome! I hoped for a huge sprawling garden like that. But am happy with our little beds for this year!!

Your garden is beautiful, weedy beds and all!

We are surveying the scene here, watching and waiting, and beginning to prepare for next year’s garden. Thanks for inspiring us… xo

I’m thinking it looks like a carnival squash now! That or a large dumpling squash… I find the jungle period of the garden less fun than when everything is planted and looks all neat and pretty, despite the fact that the harvest comes now!

I was also going to suggest that it might be a carnival.

Wow, your garden is gorgeous! We have some lettuce, the pumpkin plants are getting bigger, and we just put in some more radishes. Mmmm!
