Yarn Along

~ Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading, and the evidence of this often shows up in my photographs.  I love seeing what other people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or crocheting right now? What are you reading? Take a photo and share it either on your blog or on Flickr. Leave a link below to share your photo with the rest of us! ~

Yarn Along

I’m knitting a sock.  A sock!  Assuming I follow through with these, this will be my first pair.  Seth requested socks nearly a year ago.  I found yarn in the perfect color (he doesn’t branch far from dark green) and bought it within days of the request.  I wound it months ago, but couldn’t get excited about socks for some reason.  This week I decided that I better start working on them.  A couple of inches in I started getting kind of excited.  The ribbing is so nice and stretchy and the color is so pretty.  I think I like knitting socks (well, a sock.)  I just hope that I can persevere through sock number two without becoming too bored.  The pattern is a free one, and I am using Muscadine sock yarn.

I picked up Sarah’s Key at the library today and I am already about halfway through. The story is a fictionalized account of events surrounding the great Velodrome d’Hiver roundup which took place in France in 1942. It’s a very sad book so far.

Maybe this is a sign I should be knitting socks instead of the Oaklet Shawl! That IS the purpose of sock yarn, maybe my shawl needs a different yarn. I just can’t picture myself finishing two entire socks. Hmm, have to think on this a bit. Will be checking for the book at my local library. Thank you for Yarn Along, it really keeps me motivated!

I’ve read that book, it is sad, but I found the history very interesting, and I’m not really a history buff.
Socks, I’ve the second one on needles for about 6-7 years 🙁 the Farmer is waiting, I think he’s forgotten.

Oh, that green is so lovely! Reminds me of a day in the woods. So happy to hear you started the sock business. I also did so a few month back, inspired by yarn along of course and have done a few pairs since. Love it! Enjoy!!!

My special guy will only wear charcoal and black handknits. Forest green sounds really exciting in comparison :). I hope you can get excited about socks, because I want to try some and I’m sure your excitement will be infectious.

I started reading “Sarah’s Key” at Target one day, and had read half the book before I looked up again. I meant to go check it out from the library to finish it, but I have to be in a bit of a gloomy mood for a book that dark, so I’ve never made it.

The beautiful color of that green yarn is probably a nice counterpoint!

My first real knitting project was this exact pattern! before that, just gauge swatches. i did get a mean case of “second sock syndrome” though– i started them in january and didn’t get the second one done until last week! it only took me 4 days though, and they were ready (for my husband) just in time for father’s day! good luck!

Ginny, you’ve got to learn to knit socks 2 at a time. It’s the only way!! No more ‘second sockitis’ 🙂 I like using the 2 circular needle method, but magic loop works too. I love the green.

I just love to hear of a knitter tackling socks, it’s such rewarding knitting. Unfortunately after knitting close to 50 pairs (and teaching sock knitting), I’ve completely burned myself out so sock yarn is in time out for now. I always did what so many others above commented on, get another set of dpn’s and get that second sock going and they’ll be done in no time. I absolutely loved Sarah’s Key, one of the best books I’ve ever read along with The Book Thief (young adult novel and same subject matter, but I couldn’t put it down). Happy knitting! Can’t wait to see your completed pair in that gorgeous green, my favorite color!

Love the sock color – hope you keep up your excitement for the matching one. Sarah’s Key was much better in the first half of the book than the 2nd imo. The 2nd was a little more cliche writing and I really hated how the author’s view of divorce was ho-hum. I won’t say more since I don’t want to spoil the read for you.

I’m going to knit socks soon, too! Good luck … I prefer the toe-up method which I find similar to the top-down method for pullovers. Sarah’s Key has been on my list of “to read” for too long … must get to it.

I knit socks two at a time, not in the loop method, just two socks on two sets of double pointed needles. When I finish a few rows of knitting on one, I do the same amount of rows on the other. The reason is that I am a one sock knitter otherwise. I have a couple of socks floating around here that never got their mate.

Ooh, the green is lovely! Like it wants to get lost in a forest on a long hike. 🙂 I love sock knitting. A nice simple pattern is a a good start (and small feet, ha!) I started knitting socks by knitting them for Finn around age 3. Quicker turnaround and great confidence builder.

Learning to knit socks was on my list of New Year’s resolutions for 2011, I think. I wasn’t having too much luck and got frustrated. I really ought to give it another go, as all my kids (and the husband) could use wool socks in the winter, and I can’t afford them!

I am so inspired! And your color is just gorgeous. I love greens…

Stop right where you are and go get another set of dpns and start your second sock. Catch up to the point where you are now and then knit them side by side. Knit a few rows of one, then knit the same few rows on the other. This was the only way I was cured of second sock syndrome. I would like to learn to learn how to knit two at a time on circulars…but I tried once and it became a tangled mess.

My tip for persevering with socks is to cast on the second sock immediately after finishing the first – don’t wait until the next day! – and take it everywhere with you.

My knitting has been somewhat slow and interrupted this week :o/

I brought my first yarn for socks recently, as socks are on my list of things to attempt to knit. It is Winter here in Australia and I am knitting a cardigan for myself and a sweater for my baby at present, but when the weather warms up again I shall begin on the socks. I too am concerned though that my patience and interest may be exhausted at the end of the first sock. 🙂

Hooray for jumping on the sock wagon! I’m still working on my socks this week.

Tracey suggested to me to knit both socks at the same time so you don’t suffer the dreaded “second sock” syndrome. It really has helped both me (and my Mom!) with our sock knitting.

Sock knitting is the reason I taught myself to knit and I love it. To avoid the dreaded second sock syndrome I knit both socks side by side using dpn’s. I knit the ribbing on one, then do the second sock on another set of needles, then move to the leg and do both of those and so on, that way they are both done at the same time.

Socks…I have knit many pairs of socks for my kids, but not for myself. I think that part of the problem I have is the thought of using such small needles…and how long that will take me to finish all those tiny stitches! It is a goal of mine to get socks made for myself this year. Also sweaters…but that is another story 🙂 I love the color!
