Saturday Garden Journal

first potatoes

need to get these in the ground

need to get these in the ground

garden pest

can you spot the Intruder?

June 1st a.m.

We ate the last of the strawberries early this week.  That is always a bit sad.  Beatrix and I uncovered our first potatoes Tuesday evening and we ate them for dinner.  Then she and I spent the night very sick.  It wasn’t the best way to herald the new potato season.  I have two flats full of more plants than I really have room for and I was supposed to get them all in the ground this week.  Oh well!  Maybe in the next few days.  Jonny has begun clearing out the three remaining large beds that were full of crimson clover.  Intruder has been using the piles as a cushion.  If you look closely, you can see him in the last two photos cuddled up there.  He thinks he owns the garden so of course he shows up in most of my garden photos.

I have all sorts of winter squash ready in those flats.  I don’t have much luck with those because of squash bugs, but I always try anyway.  The sweet potatoes that I planted in an old wheelbarrow have sent up lots of sprouts so I will move them to one of the large garden beds this week too.  I planted a bunch of organic peanuts in between my rows of garlic.  The garlic needs to be dug now, and I am not convinced those peanuts are going to come up.

English peas are ready, but my kids haven’t felt like picking this week because of the illness.  Maybe this weekend!

How is your garden growing?

Your garden is certainly productive! So sorry to hear about your illness — never any fun at all. Hope you’re all well soon and can find a spot for those seedlings!

    Blessings, ~Lisa @ HappyinDoleValley 🙂

What a great idea to have a garden link-up. I found you through “little macaroon” and thought I’d join in. Happy gardening!

Potatoes already! Strawberry season, over! We live in Canada and have a zone 3 garden. I can’t even imagine. I am happy if I get a harvest before first frost in September. Your garden is beautiful. Peanuts? My kids would love to plant peanuts. I am not sure that they would even grow here.

We live much farther north, so our growing season is pretty short. We put our plants in the ground two weeks ago along with some seeds. They’re all sprouting now! Still not very nice weather though, but probably just perfect for the baby garden. I think I over planted my two little beds… I am considering picking up a couple of big pots I saw at Costco and moving the summer squash and zucchini into them…

Oh my, we are quite a bit behind you in regards to the strawberries and potatoes. We don’t have strawberries of our own, but we go and pick them. They only just opened a week or two ago. And our potato plants only just came up. Anyway, your potatoes look gorgeous and I bet they were delicious. Nothing like a fresh, earthy potato!

Good luck with all the growing!

Photos of cats and gardens, it doesn’t get any better than that! Seeing how small your cat looks in that be really makes is clear just how big your garden is, you are so lucky to have that space!
Your garden looks amazing, I still have the winter image in my head so it’s so neat to see how it’s changed. So glad that you’ve been able to harvest so much already. Do you mean that your strawberry season is over? Ours hasn’t begun! We tried peanuts and nothing happened too, we think they are just a gag by the seed companies!! ;o)
Please keep posting the garden news, I love reading and seeing photos of everything!
    xoxo

Our strawberries are just starting! Your potatoes look great; they’re always a top favorite crop for me. We’re never successful with sweet potatoes, though.

Beautiful garden. And I love the raised beds, I’m thinking that’s the way I should have gone this year.

Oh potatoes! My daughter loves potatoes (as do the rest of us, but her love is bigger). One year we tried planting potatoes – they take up a lot of room. Do you designate one bed for potatoes only? Do you hill or trench them? We were sort of clueless then and still are.

Do you rotate your beds? How? Any suggestions/tips?

The crimson clover – was that a cover crop?

Hope your kids are on the mend. That never makes for good days for anyone.

How very delicious Ginny. All of it. I am jealous…we are a great deal behind you with the strawberries, ours just have blossoms! And the potatoes are a late August harvest for us.

Can I come live with you?!?!?!
    Hee hee.

Such beautiful space you have. I love the kitty especially.

Glad everyone is on the mend.

    Hugs, Jules

Those potatoes are beautiful! I’m hoping that this might be the week we get more than herbs out of the garden. Not until I’m finished putting up the cherries we’re going to pick this morning though. 😉
