Yarn Along

~ Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading, and the evidence of this often shows up in my photographs.  I love seeing what other people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or crocheting right now? What are you reading? Take a photo and share it either on your blog or on Flickr. Leave a link below to share your photo with the rest of us! ~
Yarn Along

I love both my knitting and my book this week.  I am working on a shawl for a friend and the pattern is simple enough that I can work on it throughout the day.  I won’t have enough yarn to make it as big as the pattern calls for, but there is a recipe for making either a smaller or larger shawl, so I can just downsize a bit.  I love the color and wish this photo did a better job portraying it.

I first saw A Girl of the Limberlost at a gift shop in Shenandoah National Forest, and recently bought a copy of it.  Have any of you read anything by Gene Stratton Porter?  I love the way she combines fiction with nature in this book and will certainly be seeking out more of her work.  The heroine of the story is a young lady named Elnora who pays her way through school by gathering and selling moths in the forest and swamp near her home.  It’s a bit of a Cinderella story and who doesn’t love those?  I have hardly been able to put the book down since I started reading it last week.  It’s considered a classic, but is definitely an easy read.

Ginny, Your book sounds right up my alley. I will add it to my 10 mile long books-to-read list. I try to read and knit constantly but it is challenging with the tot. How do you do it with all of those little ones underfoot? I bet at some point the more children in the house the more hands to help with the household duties.

The Song of the Cardinal is amazing, my four year old daughter was awestruck as I read parts to her. She even laughed when the swamp was described as a dining room for birds.
Love the shawl. As usual, looking at what you knit inspires me to drop what I’m doing and pick up my needles.

Ginny-I read that book a year ago or so and LOVED it! I went on to buy Freckles and a few other titles. I’ve not read them though-I started Freckles but it just didn’t grab me like Girl of the Limberlost did. Oh, it is sooooo good. Made me want to go the Limberlost and hunt moths!

I have a first edition copy of A Girl of the Limberlost that I got in high school. Sadly, it’s crumbling, but I have a new edition, and Freckles, too, which I also adore. I’m so surprised that you’re just now discovering it because it’s so right up your alley! I simply adore Jean Stratton Porter, and I’m not even that outdoorsy. Enjoy!

I just started reading A Girl of the Limberlost yesterday! I am really enjoying it.
Do you remember the t.v. movie that aired on PBS in the 90s?
I remember watching that when it came out and always wanting to read it.
The book is just lovely. It choked me up more than once in the first couple of chapters.

You always knit with such lovely yarns. I haven’t yet figured out how to choose yarn that I’m going to love once it’s knit up. Ah well, I’ll sort it out yet – one skein at a time.

The yarn is lovely, and I think I already said it reminds me of jasper or agate.
The story is a good one, and the movie is quite good, too…but I seem to have a love of stories that place the protagonists in wonderful, natural surroundings.

No Yarn Along for me this week–I missed a stitch somewhere in the first lace row, tried to make it up and the pattern ended up out of line in the first repeat. That and my sloppy button holes made me decide to unravel about 230 yards and start over.

Thank you, Lord, for teaching me humility…

I haven’t read the book but did see the movie (it was wholesome, family-oriented, not the best acted but very nice) one night as I was knitting (watched it free on youtube) and liked the story a lot! That yarn color is wonderful – your last yarn-along post – I’m not surprised that many people asked you what yarn that is/was. Gorgeous.

That shawl is looking beautiful! this is my first yarn along wednesday, I love the idea of it……. unfortunately I do not get much time to read these days, what with the homeschooling and the knitting, but I am a great fan of poetry and I dip in and out of my collection of poetry books all the time, they give me just the right injection of inspiration when things get tough – like the beginning of the hat I am trying to knit at the moment – shown in a tangled mess in my photo! The book is Alice Oswald’s ‘Dart’- a beautiful long poem about a river that runs through the county of Devon in England to the sea.

    thank you,
    Louisa
