We had friends over this week. We shared our mud, our bees, and some chips and guacamole with them.
Our little girls love each other so much. It’s the sweetest thing. And the boys: they only took a few minutes to take off for the woods together.
Our time with the bees was especially amazing, watching the children shed their fear, my own kids included. (Well, actually one certain nine year old girl was clearly never afraid of any old honeybees.)
Because what do you do when you only have two bee jackets and a crowd of children anxious for an up close peek? Well, you take turns. But sometimes that isn’t enough. In that case, you just walk right up and watch the bees working their magic and you realize that you aren’t afraid; that there isn’t anything to be afraid of. I think we all gained a new level of confidence on this day.
Come back soon friends! We miss you already.

Ginny! What GORGEOUS comb they are drawing – they look so healthy. Good for you guys.
We got our bees this past week. We are in love already…and I so hear you on the fear dissipating. I’ve actually found we’re able to work with them with no smoke and no gloves. No stings at all yet. I do have an essential oil mixture I made that I’ve sprayed on my hands but I’m not sure if that makes a difference or not..haven’t had the courage to try without yet!! I put some pics up on our fledgling cidery/farm website (linked above) if you want to take a peek. Cheers..and thanks for sharing!

Oh what fun! I had to laugh seeing Elizabeth’s needle and thread post this week – your sewing desk had a camera lens out on it. That is a common sight here so it reminded me of myself and my sewing desk which is also my knitting desk, photography desk and whatever else I may fancy at the moment…
Gotta love the Lands End dresses! Ciara lives in them and Kaulini has a few, too.

LOVE the mudpie pictures! 🙂
Watched a documentary this week that made me think of you. Have you seen ‘The Vanishing of the Bees?’ I learned a lot. Today I read about another bee documentary that I want to see.
Ginny says
Yes, we saw that one, also “Queen of the Sun” (at least I think that’s what it was called….)

I was just noticing that the kids don’t seem afraid at all. Good for them.
I also really love your daughter’s dress in the very first picture. Do you know the pattern (if you made that one)?
Ginny says
Funny, all dresses in this post are Land’s End!

Oh what a fun visit. I thought the kids looked brave getting so close without bee gear. I had to smile when reading your explanation. Beautiful post as always.

Love seeing this. We just installed our bees Sunday…with a ton of friends watching.

In the pouring rain, nonetheless! My husband stated I had sent him a blog to read ( yours) that stated the bees wouldn’t like rain let alone pouring rain…ahh well.
And the same thing happened… They realized the bees are just a bunch of ladies trying to get their errands and homemaking done…lol, everyone could get behind that! Any time you can climb over fear and be strong is an important day.
Loved seeing the Foss’ at your hive…truly a wonderful community you are exposing your children to!
You are a wonderful mother.
Thanks for letting us come along.
