My chickens

So I am pretty sure that our chickens amuse me way more than they do any of you reading, so I hope you don’t mind seeing a ton of pictures of them!  I feel like I have done a good job of restraining myself and really limiting my chicken posts.  This is my first time having any sort of farmish animal and the novelty hasn’t worn off yet.  I don’t think it will anytime soon either because we are yet to get our first egg.  The girls should start laying around the end of October and then, even worse than tons of chicken pictures, I will be posting egg pictures.
Our roosters are now crowing.  This is hugely exciting for me.  I open my kitchen windows so I can hear them better. It makes me feel all Tasha Tudor minus the fabulous garden and corgis.  I always pictured a rooster tilting it’s head back and opening it’s mouth wide to cock a doodle doo, but mine barely open their mouths at all. They just sort of cock their head sideways and let it out. It is hard to tell they are doing anything at all besides the obvious sound they make. I am glad that I took the advice of a friend who raises chickens and went ahead and got roosters.  Of course we realize that three is too many-we only ordered the two and got the third as some sort of demented bonus.
Our chickens aren’t tame.  They come when I call them because they want me to give them some scratch or some other treat, but they don’t hop in our laps or enjoy being held.  They really are “birdbrained.”  It seems to me that all they think about is eating.  That’s fine because I like to feed little creatures like them and I love the way the whole pack of them chases after me when I go to get their feed.
Even though I really love them, I no longer give kisses on the beak.

Hee…that vampire book actually almost put me to sleep until the last third of it. Did you read Sweet Valley High? It's like Sweet Valley High meets Dracula. 🙂

Your love of having chickens reminds me of a book you might like: Barbara Kingsolver's "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle." (I think that's what it's called; if you search for a list of Kingsolver's books, you should be able to find it.) I do not know how large its writing is though!

😀 I usually pick up books from the teenage section in the library nowadays, the shorter the better.

I LOVE hearing about your chickens! I know I'd feel just the same….there are some lovely things in life that just don't lose the pleasure they give. I enjoy the photos, too….the one of the two boys and the chickens would be a prize-winner; I just love it.I suppose every time you do a chicken post I have to talk about my foray into chickens – when we hatched eggs as part of our homeschooling science. (Perhaps MOST of our homeschooling science because science is absolutely NOT my thing – MYSTERY is my thing.) I loved that so much.Perhaps when you said you were reading M&M – right then I should have expressed my astonishment and awe and then you wouldn't feel so guilty. I read it years ago when I was deeply immersed in Russian literature, and even then, without print-size issues….I hate to say – it was not my thing. I just couldn't connect to it, somehow and thus found it "hard to follow" (and I say this who have read Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and other Russian authors in the original). I mean – for me, it was hard! (So Fioletta rose immediately in my estimation, if that is possible, when I saw she was reading it.)Try some Tolstoy. Or a vampire book beloved by all middle school girls. I have not read these, but the enthusiasm of my speech students (even the really smart ones) last year convinced me that perhaps I ought to.I'm reading The Little Princess to the kids now, though, and that's the limit of my present ability to delve into literature of any sort. I hope you don't mind long responses! Keep the chicken posts coming! Can't wait for eggs!
