Jonny and I have been talking about a mantle, and our need for one for years. For some reason this project stayed on the back burner for the longest time. Then last week Jonny decided it was time. I am not sure if his timing had anything to do with the fact that it was the end of the quarter for him at work and he was totally swamped with the sort of work that involves staring at the computer for endless hours. Hmmm. Anyway, we have this crazy shed thingie on the back of our property. It really is an eyesore, but we haven’t gotten around to doing anything with it yet. I think it’s where they used to slaughter the pigs back in the old days. There are lots of treasures in that shed though, and after a little digging Jonny came up with the materials he needed to build our mantle. We both LOVE old unpainted wood and are in love with this mantle. It is exactly perfect. I am so proud of Jonny’s creativity and ability. We can’t stop talking about our new place to stash things. And this Christmas there will actually be a place to hang stockings.
As the week has worn on, more and more has been added to the mantle. Seth has proclaimed it a nature mantle, so it is now decked out with bird’s nests, shark’s teeth, and pinecones.
I think it’s a great place to keep my knitting out of the little children’s grasp. I am pretty excited about this particular little project. I am hoping it turns out okay and Larkspur will be modeling it in a day or so.
Your home is my ideal. (Maybe your husband is, too!) Wow! It is lovely! It looks just perfect there!

Love the mantle; everyone should have one in their home whether they have a stove or fireplace or nothing at all. I remember the mantle above our fireplace in the Bay Area, seeing Craig trying to light the evening's fire, the earthquake, the look on Craig's face, the shaking and seeing all the things bounce off Craig as they fell from the mantle to the floor below. I always think of this memory every time I see or think about a mantle. Is that snow out the windows, or just bright white light? Looks like snow to me. I love your house. You should do a blog about just your house and its treasures inside. Everything I have seen so far is just so beautiful, practical, and well, so You. You have so much character in the place you call home. It's like your house has a definite history! I really think a guided tour through your house, focusing on the things that give you your greatest joy, would be a great blog. It would give all of us a chance to see where you originate. I have no mantle here in this house and I really miss having one. Take care!Marj
